Eco-Friendly Slime: What Makes Méli&Mélo’s Kits Unique

There’s no doubt that slime has become a favourite pastime for kids, thanks to many ASMR content creators making it mainstream. That said, not all slimes are created equal.

While slime is fun for the kids, some can harm the environment. Many slime products are not biodegradable and recyclable like Méli&Mélo’s slime kits.

Parents must choose eco-friendly slime products for safer toys and to support global sustainability efforts. This is a win-win situation for both parents and children.

In this article, we’ll explore the benefits of eco-friendly slime and why Méli&Mélo’s kits stand out from the rest. We also share an easy DIY slime recipe you can follow in less than 2 minutes.

Benefits of eco-friendly slime

If you want to ensure any slime product is safe for your kids or are on a mission to add your little quota to making the world a better place by reducing your waste, eco-friendly slime is the way to go. Here’s why you should opt for eco-friendly slime:

Safe for play

Méli & Mélo's slime products are crafted with your child’s safety in mind. They meet stringent CE standards that ensure borax levels stay well within legal limits.

Independent research has found that many slime products, both locally made in Europe and imported, often exceed these recommended safety limits by up to four times.

In high amounts, borax is toxic and unsafe for kids, teens, and even adults. It can cause serious health risks like allergies, irritation, hormonal changes, and respiratory problems when ingested or just coming in contact with it.

The European Union specifies 300mg/kg of boron in slime products. Check the product package to ensure the amount of boron is well below the permitted concentration. Méli&Mélo products meet this required safety limit.

Our slime products are free from toxins, which means if, for some reason, your kid puts the slime in their mouth, you don’t have to worry about their health.

For the younger kids, it makes sense to opt for non-toxic, edible, homemade slime (we’ll show you how below) to keep them safe. For older kids (6 and above), check how safe the product is before making a purchase.

You can do this by confirming if the product carries the CE standard badge. Slime is part of products that must comply with the EU Toy Safety Directive, and that badge is a sign that a slime product meets the stipulated guidelines in this product category.

Environmentally-friendly

Méli&Mélo slime products are designed with sustainability in mind. They are made from PVA, which makes them biodegradable and recyclable. PVA-based products are also non-toxic.

While the clay component of our slime is not biodegradable, the liquid portion, which makes up 70% of the product, is biodegradable. This makes our slime significantly more environmentally friendly than most other brands on the market.

Additionally, our packaging is fully recyclable, and the PVA-based slime itself can be recycled in certain regions. Although not all countries currently have the infrastructure to recycle PVA.

Check with your local waste management authorities to know if they have a program for PVA waste.

Doesn’t make a mess

At Méli&Mélo, we understand your concerns about mess. That's why our CE-certified slime products have a higher slime-to-water ratio compared to non-CE-grade products.

This higher grade ensures you’ll worry less about getting sticky messes out of your kids' hair or dresses and just focus on their play. Our slime is much easier to clean off the floor or carpet.

DIY eco-friendly slime

Did you know you can make slime at home? The good news is that the ingredients for a DIY slime recipe are pretty accessible, and the process is very straightforward and not time-consuming.

Ingredients for homemade slime

For this new eco-friendly slime, you’ll need only four natural ingredients.

  • 1 cup of cornstarch
  • 30ml of water
  • Xanthan gum
  • Food colouring

Mixing the cornflour and water creates what scientists call Oobleck. This means the mixture acts like a solid when you exert pressure and a liquid when no pressure is applied, giving it a gooey, slimy texture.

However, there’s a simple problem. The mixture of cornstarch and water is a bit watery, which means your children may not be able to get an excellent grasp to shape the slime as well as they want.

That’s where xanthan gum, a food-grade emulsifier, comes in. An emulsifier is an ingredient that helps combine substances that naturally do not mix well.

For example, egg yolk is used as an emulsifier in ice cream to make the fat and water components of the mixture bind well rather than separate, resulting in a smoother texture and a more “chewable” bite. The same applies to xanthan, which allows slime to maintain its shape for much longer.

This recipe is better and safer than other slime recipes that use materials like contact lens solution and PVA glue.

Steps to make a homemade eco-friendly slime

The steps to make a biodegradable slime with the four ingredients listed above include:

  • Step 1: Measure a cup of cornstarch. A cup is about 16 tablespoons and around 160 grams.
  • Step 2: Measure 30 ml of water and add your kid’s favourite food colour in a cup. Have fun experimenting with different colour mixes.
  • Step 3: Pour the cornstarch into a pot or bowl. Best to use a disposable bowl.
  • Step 4: Add some coloured water to the bowl
  • Step 5: Add two pinches of xanthan to the mix
  • Step 6: Mix the ingredients slowly. Keep adding water little by little till you have the right consistency.

Keep mixing for about 30 seconds to one minute. The whole process should take no more than two minutes.
